Some numbers to exemplify:
Ping between two local machines here: .118ms
Typical ping from east coast to east coast machine: 35ms best case
Typical ping from east coast to west coast machine: 100ms best case
And, of course, you've got the bandwidth issue too. A gigabit between
local machines is a helova lot faster than DSL connections.
