[FX.php List] Upgrading from FM5.5

We are making the leap to FM9 after staying at 5.5 for many years.  We 
have several databases that we use FX on our webserver.  It appears that 
there has been a major change as to how php communicates with a database 
(change at FM7?).  It appears that the FX documentation stops at FM7, 
has the way FX communicates with a db remained the same since?  What 
port does FX use if the db server is on a different machine?  How good 
is the FM php api?
