[FX.php List] Text Area Submission --> Escaping Characters

Would someone be willing to explain the best way to escape special characters (i.e. line breaks, quotes, ampersands, Microsoft Word curly quotes and apostrophes) when submitting a web textarea to a Filemaker fields.

I have used combinations of php regex's and FMP custom functions to get the job done.  But I was wondering if someone had a more definitive approach to this?
