I have RapidSSL certs on all of my web servers, and have bought some for clients as well; I probably have a dozen of their certs. I've been extremely satisfied with them; while they may not be as well-known as Verisign or Thawte, they're also a LOT easier to work with when it comes to buying a new certificate or renewing an existing one.

Whether there is a qualitative difference between Thawte and RapidSSL is something I can't address; I will say, however, that getting a cert from Thawte used to be a huge pain, and took two weeks; getting one from RapidSSL takes about 5 minutes.
