what about

$arrayOfScores = explode( ',', $field);

or
---
$field = '10,9,9,5,10,3,1,10,6,7,8,2';
list( $a, $b, $c, $d, $e, $f, $g, $h, $i, $j, $k, $l ) = explode( ',', $field);
