Larry,
This should not be a problem. Our setup is as you describe: 1) A FileMaker
server machine with all parts of the WPE running on it (PHP not required on
this server). 2) A separate web server with PHP.
Server one could easily be a Mac running FileMaker server and all of the
WPE, and server two could easily be any web server software out there that
will run PHP. In my case they're both Windows/IIS.
Just specify the correct server IP and port in the server_data page and
you're set!

Subject: [FX.php List] PHP, FM, WPE, Linux and more ???
I've got a bit of a dillema. I've got a client that uses a Linux box
to publish their PHP site to the public. Rest of the office is PC.
I need to publish the FM db.... ultimately through the Linux box. The
php has been written and works fine.
They do NOT have windows server in the house. I'm proposing placing
the php pages, I've written, on the linux box and have those pages
call the WPE on another box running either Windows Server IIs or
Apache, or calling a Mac with OS X client.
Does anybody have knowledge of this kind of situation, or suggestions?
TIA,
Larry Schultz
