I'm facing the same dilemma, well almost, since I'm both (the  
untrained enthusiastic-amateur and the guy supposed to pick up the  
piece).

My plan is to transition to 8 first, and then to rebuild one "module"  
at a time to make it manageable.
I agree it will be hard, but we can't afford not to. At the current  
rate, improving the system based on users' requests is already a  
nightmare.
I think I spend at least 70% of the time trying to figure out whats  
going on, trying not to break existing functionality.
Although this is noy efficient, I would say it it great training...
