The PHP script is run from a windows client command line in this format: php myuploadscript.php ?thefile.txt? Using FX as the ?engine?. This has been working nicely until we upgraded to FMS13, it still works but very slow. The IT dept has done extensive testing and tracing and says it is the FX library where the slowness occurs. I know my code may not be using FX correctly so I have 2 questions: 1. Is someone willing to look at the part of the script that does the writing to see if there is a better way (below) 2. Could a subset of fx.php be written so the overhead in FX is minimized? (So only functions needed are included) Any other ideas? Same layout now for the search query... some of the fields would succeed in returning results, some would not. All I was looking for was a found count at first, just to confirm that it was working... and even that would fail on 2 of the 10 fields in my search form. Then, this morning, when I created a new layout with a single field on it, it worked immediately; this leads me to see that something about that layout that I created yesterday was causing the query to fail. My path today will be to slowly add only the fields I need, rather than nuking the ones that I don't, and see how far that takes me without error. This client's data is messy, so I'm wondering if perhaps one or more fields have something odd in them... Suggest you peruse the data and see what kind of stuff is in there. How about this: Create one new record and put a known good value in the Composer field. Change your query to search for that record. If that works, you know that the query works for a known good value in the Composer field. Then, add the value list fields to the layout one by one and see if/when it breaks. If it breaks right away on the first value list, try another one. The first one you try might be the culprit. Keep in mind that multiple (or all) of the value lists might be bad. Given the crap that end users will paste into a FileMaker field from MSWord or worse, I?m still betting on weird characters in either Composer or one or more of the value lists. If all existing value lists fail, create a new value list and put it on the layout with Composer. By this time, we have isolated all of the entities and should have an ?Aha? moment of clarity. The ultimate solution might be to apply a php function to the output of the data query to normalize data weirdness. They are having a jaw-dropping promotion to help fill newly acquired rack space: $100 for an entire year?s hosting?apparently 90% off the regular prices. http://macminicolo.net/100 I added an additional machine to take advantage of the offer. I've confirmed this in my own tests as well (hence the delay.) The same individual, Claus Lavendt, also sent the following this morning: With FMS 13v.1 FMI engineers made changes in the xml to make it compliant with the standard. Unfortunately this resulted in failing any calls, where the resultset included ascii charaters below 32, which is used as control characters. They are invisible and therefore hard to detect. Many FileMaker users copy text from emails, word documents, web browsers and other apps and paste it into FileMaker fields. It can often happen that such copy blocks include invisible characters, that is ascii below 32. When you make a request via the xml (or actually the WPE component), where any field in any record include such a character, the request will fail and sometimes also result in long response times. Due to several circumstances, this issue was not fixed until FMS13.0v5 If you are using the WPE component for XML calls or CWP, you need to make sure that your server is at least FMS13.0v5 It's possible that this behavior is the reason for some of the problems that people have encountered recently (I think Bob had a recent problems along this line.) Finally, any of you that may be involved in testing of future versions of FileMaker server: please test for the XML bug as you evaluate, and report any problems VIA APPROPRIATE CHANNELS (I don't want to encourage folks to violate confidentiality.) This bug reappeared in FMS 12 after being spotted and fixed just before the release of FMS 11; hopefully we can prevent that from happening again.
