agreed about the "blind curve" thing with tinyurl links.

so, for the cautious among us there is,

http://preview.tinyurl.com/352cn5

that will open a preview page on tinyurl with the actual url spelled out.

also, there is a little javascript that you can put in your buttons that 
will take the current webpage and make a tinyurl thereby lessening the 
amount of work.

and about those <>... they don't always work in even "decent" email 
programs. and they don't work exactly when you most want them to work - 
like sending a link to the older set.

in fact, on the original message, there was no automatic hyperlink for 
me (using latest mac osx mozilla thunderbird). even though, as you 
noted, there was one in the reply... which is curious.

sometimes i use http://snurl.com too because it has different capabilities.
