[FX.php List] problems with numbers and queries

I've found that I'm sometimes unable to return a found set if I am
querying a layout by a number field.
I have it set to no indexing - 

I've found that the only thing that works is to make a calculated field
with a result of text that equals the number field I need.

Has anyone else had this problem?  What could cause this?
