I went the easy route and upgraded to Marc Liyanage's PHP package, which
comes with a host of modules that the default OS X build does not (including
GD). The beauty of this package is that it installs in a new location,
leaving the default install intact, should you wish to roll back. Much
simpler than mucking about with recompiles etc - it's already done for you!
